Laser Hair Removal
At Medical Aesthetics of the Hudson Valley you can work with trained laser hair removal specialist and member of the ASLMS, the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. Laser hair removal has been around since the late 90’s and it has proven to be the most effective method available for permanent hair removal.
How does Laser Hair Removal work?
The laser carefully targets melanin (color) of the hair inside the follicle. The heat from the laser damages the surrounding structure of the follicle and makes it difficult for new hair to grow. Perfect for women and men.

Who is a candidate for Laser Hair Removal?
Treatments are available for both men and women. The ideal candidate has light skin and dark hair, but almost everyone is a potential candidate. We have a variety of lasers to treat almost all skin types. Dark hair responds the best; blonde, grey and red hair are the least responsive. However, we do recommend you contact us for a free consult because there are alternative options available for you.
Laser Hair Removal for Darker Skin:
When treating African American and other very dark skinned patients we typically use the 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser. This laser is least absorbed by the melanin pigment in the skin, but it still sees the melanin in the hair shaft making it the safest laser for dark skin.
How do I prepare for Laser Hair Removal?
It is important for you not to be too tan before your laser treatment. Tanned skin can effect how the laser is absorbed.
Please avoid direct sun exposure: stop tanning, using tanning beds, or tanning creams. Stop waxing or plucking. The hair needs to be in the follicle. Please shave before your treatment.
How many sessions are recommended?
Depending on skin tone and the location of the hair we are treating, 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart are suggested.
Does Laser Hair removal hurt?
Laser hair removal feels like a hot rubber band snap. Application of an ice pack prior to treatment is helpful and we can provide a topical numbing agent if needed.
What can I expect after Treatment?
You can return to your normal routine, however you should avoid direct sun exposure and wear a high SPF sunblock. You may experience mild redness or swelling. This is perfectly normal. Redness usually subsides within a half hour. Sometimes after treating a large area, such as legs or bikini, it may feel as though you have a sunburn. You may use ice packs or a soothing aloe vera gel if needed. You should continue to avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds for several weeks after treatment. Don’t pluck, wax, pick, rub or scrub at hairs. Gentle cleansing is recommended.
