How to treat skin of color
How do you treat skin of color? With lots of TLC!
Dark skin types, Fitzpatrick IV, V,VI, African American, Asians and Latinos know their skin requires special attention. Melanin is packed differently than in lighter skin types and this makes the skin more reactive. This can mean darkening caused by trauma, like pimples, bug bites, shaving, or any kind of inflammation. This trauma beings a vicious cycle of inflammation that leads to hyperpigmentation. Even clogged pores (non inflammatory) can elicit inflammation that leaves dark spots.
Here are few cardinal rules to follow:
Avoid inflammation and control acne. Never pick.
Use target acne products that decongest and brighten. Salicylic acid, azelaic acid and tretinoin are our favorites.
Use brightening agents. Sure, Hydroquinone is an excellent prescription option and there are fantastic non prescriptions available with less risk and side effects, specifically Tranexamic acid.
Do Chemical Peels, Microdermabrasion and Hydration Facials. These are safest for dark skin types with excellent results for brightening and hyperpigmentation.
Approach Laser Hair Removal with CAUTION. If you suffer from facial and neck hair that is leaving you with ingrowns and hyperpigmentation then you absolutely need to get rid of the hair. But only use a 1064 Nd:Yag. One laser does not fit all skin types. (We have several different devices including a 1064.)
Avoid Most Other Lasers. Including IPL, BBL, Fraxel. These lasers create heat and inflammation thus inducing hyperpigmentation.
Microneedling for acne scars. No heat here. Super safe. Several sessions for excellent results.
Use Sunscreen. Everyday. Forever. Baby your skin and treat it with respect! Never use harsh products. Come in for regular skin care to keep you gorgeous, clean, clear and spot free!
