No More Seeing Double: Kybella and Submental Fullness
While a photograph is often a memento of a happy moment, sometimes we look at ourselves in pictures and judge things we don’t like. Perhaps we feel self-conscious about our profile or what we might view as a “double chin.” Such concerns can find us shying away from the camera. Today, however, we are looking straight on as we talk about non-surgical options to better define your jaw/chin/profile line.
First, why do we get double chins and why are they so hard to get rid of? Sometimes this phenomenon, also known as submental fullness, can be related to weight gain but most often one sees the jawline sag due to aging and genetics. Some people are simply more genetically predisposed to carry fat in this area and, unfortunately, this fat is very difficult to address, even with diet and exercise.
If you are bothered by submental fullness – as 67% percent of those surveyed do – then the procedure known as Kybella might be for you. Composed of synthetic deoxycholic acid that attacks fat cells in this specific area, the results are very noticeable and, what’s more, permanent. Once the cells have been destroyed, they can no longer accommodate fat, meaning further treatments won’t be required.
Administered by our very own Dr. Dean Bloch, this FDA-approved procedure consists of small injections that take place below the chin. Dr. Bloch will go nice and slow, assessing the injections as the procedure goes along. The treatment requires some patience as it’s typically around 3-6 treatments over the course of several months, but is well worth the effort, resulting in a more defined chin and jawline for a younger-looking profile that will last for years to come. Check out the before/afters to see what I’m talking about.
A less expensive way to address facial fullness is fillers. Fillers can lessen the appearance of sagging skin around the jaw, helping your face appear more sculpted. A chin or jaw filler is an easy, effective way to strengthen contours for a more defined facial structure. Injections of temporary dermal fillers entail a thoughtful 15-30 minute session, little downtime and can last approximately 12 months.
As with any injection, some minor bruising and swelling may occur with either of these procedures. For that reason, we sometimes suggest beginning treatments on a Thursday or Friday, as swelling typically subsides by Monday. Contact us for more information or schedule a consultation. We want you to smile more in photos and know these procedures will give you something to smile about.
